Decide what the object needs to do

A label, a wooden sign and an apparel transfer can begin with the same drawing, but each calls for a different material and finishing process. Choose the object before choosing the equipment.

Begin with paper or vinyl

A digital cutter can help you explore shapes, lettering and layered paper work. Permanent adhesive vinyl is for suitable hard surfaces; it is not a replacement for heat-transfer vinyl on clothing.

Move into a prepared workshop

Laser cutting introduces material restrictions, fumes and fire precautions. UV printing introduces ink handling, surface preparation and maintenance. Read the exact equipment guidance and plan the workspace before investing.

Test, document, repeat

Keep a record of material, settings and the outcome of each test. Make a small sample before a full piece, and change one variable at a time when a result needs improving.
